Scams offering fake Au Pair positions
by justyna81 Tue Apr 17, 2012 10:15 am
Hi, I need a help. I've got a three message and I'd like to know if it a scam. Could you check it for me?
Here is a messages:

I read your profile on the great aupairs web site - we are looking for an au apair to start in as soon as possible. We live on the Wirral - about 30 miles from Chester, 5 from Liverpool. We have 3 boys - aged 7 and 6 year old twins who are at school full time. You would live in our house and have your own room with bathroom and kitchen. If you would like to know further details please email me sending your resume and references.

Regards

Your boyfriend coming with you may work well for us too. We may have an opportunity for him to drive for my husband's pharmacy company and do some gardening in our house. If you were both coming it may work better for you to live in a small flat together about 2 minutes walk from our house. This would give you more privacy - all of your household bills would be taken care of and we could come to an agreement about salary etc.. If you have both have a resume or CV you could email to me and references that would be great. We go on holiday to Ireland each year - where were you last year. If we could have a reference from your family that would be good too.

Look forward to hearing from you

Thank you for your email - you will not need to pay for the flat this will come as part of your pay - regarding food we will provide this for you too. Regarding pay this will depend on the work that you carry out and I would prefer to discuss this over the phone with you if that is OK. The reason that we suggested you live in a flat is because this will provide more room for two of you.
If you have a phone number I can call you and we can discuss further.

Regards

I'll be grateful if you check it for me.
Thanks :)

Hello justyna81,

The emails which you have posted show no typical signs of a scam. The only slightly suspicious wording is regarding 'pay' or a 'salary' - an au pair in the UK is not paid, but is given pocket money only.

However, if you are EEA citizens, it is possible for you to work in the UK, and receive payment, and therefore it is also possible that the host family is thinking of this, and not sticking strictly to the usual au pair position.

Proceed with natural caution, of course, and do talk with the host family on the phone also. If you are asked to transfer money for any reason, this would be a sure sign of a scam. But at the moment, and despite the mentions of pay and salary, there is no reason to suspect that a money transfer will be requested. Therefore, I will remove the host family's name and email address from your post, for their own privacy - you were correct to include them, as this helps us to identify scammers, but we only leave them in posts when we can confirm that it is a scam.

It sounds like a scam to me. The English is better than many, but there is still a few African tinges to it.

Also, there is the matter of visas. In addition to the restrictions on au pairs in the UK, there are also strict controls on the employment of domestic staff (which your boyfriend would be is he worked as a gardener). You don't say which country you are from, but if it is outside of the EU then unless you come from one of the following countries, you are not eligible to work in the UK.

Australia
Canada
Japan
New Zealand
Monaco
Taiwan

Please do not tell scammers that they are listed here - it will take them seconds to change their fake details and their new details will not be listed for any future victims to find.
