Scams offering fake Au Pair positions
by beever84 Mon May 21, 2012 6:51 pm
I have received many emails and their profile seems genuine, they have asked for rent but are open to discussion. Please help, I have already fallen victim to a scam and I don't want it to happen again!
Here are the emails:

We are a successful, fun, organized, and social couple with a brand new baby boy named William in our lives and love every minute of our time with him!

Currently, we have a duplex garden apartment on the upper east side and are looking at charging a reduced rent of $1000 in exchange for a live in who is available during weekday 9-5 hours while we are at work as a \"core nanny\".

We have extremely predictable schedules (I am home by 5:30 and Bill is home by 7:30 each day), so there is opportunity to pursue a part time job to further your own goals (work, school etc) and we also have a cover sitter for evening events/galas/shows. We would welcome someone interested in romping through central park with our blue eyed cutie!

Our apartment is two levels and has garden access, with nice living room, bathroom, kitchen and a completely furnished room for you.

We look forward to hearing from you and working out the rest of the details together!

Best:

Bill :0) and Anna :0)

Hello,

Please let Anna and I know when we can arrange a call with you this weekend!

we\'re excited to speak more with you!

Hello,

we realize it might be difficult to pay our discounted rent, however,
we leave the possibility of looking for part time work (new york
options abound) and also the possibility to pursue your own academic
intersts open as well.

we are only looking for someone who would be available from 9-5pm and
would be willing to watch our child during those weekday hours.
giving our live in the ability to pursue other jobs. We also know
several nurses here in the city and wouldn't be opposed to helping you
find a connection to some of the hospitals in NYC.

Please let us know your thoughts here, as we are looking for someone
for a start date of June 1st.

Many thanks for your continuing interest and your love compliments.

we love that your expierence is as a nurse and find this a crucial
component. you are one of our top choices!

Hello,

We'd love to work with you and find a doable rent number for you as we think you'd be a terrific fit.

What is a doable rent number for you? We'd love to find a solution that works best for you.

All best,
Anna

Hello beever84,

Those emails do not show typical signs of a scam, although certainly you would not want to send any advance rent before arriving in the country and meeting with the family.

For a paid childcare position, you would also need to discover whether you could obtain a visa for working in the USA. There is an overview here:

http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/types ... 271.html#1

You will need to attend an interview at the US Embassy or Consulate in your own country.

If it is an au pair position, however, you will need to follow the US Government regulations regarding this. The US Government currently allows 14 sponsors only to run au pair programs in the USA. You can read about this here:

http://j1visa.state.gov/programs/au-pair/

http://j1visa.state.gov/participants/how-to-apply/

And you will find a list of designated sponsors here:

http://j1visa.state.gov/participants/ho ... =&x=14&y=8

You must go through one of those agencies if you wish to become an au pair in the United States. An individual family in the USA is not permitted to directly engage you as an au pair; it is not permitted by US immigration law.
