The substituted word is consistent with a native speaker of a Romance language. The spelling errors look like a mix of Italian and German. As she stated that she and her husband speak these languages, I'm inclined to think it's genuine.

Depending on what country you're coming from and going to, you may not be allowed to travel without a visa. A common tactic in au pair scams is to say that you have to contact a travel agent in the host country for a visa. This is false. To get a visa, you contact the consulate or embassy of the country you're traveling to in the country where you are.

Can you post the email headers? If she is in fact somewhere else, they'll probably show it.

I'd ask for a written agreement, but I don't know that much about au pairs.

Hello malakes,

These emails show no typical sign of a scam, and if you google the host family's email address, you will see an advert from two years ago, which is consistent with what they are telling you now.

You were correct to post their email address for further research, but I will remove it again now, as we only continue to publicize email addresses of confirmed scammers.

It is important, however, that you feel reassured about any family that you intend to go and live with. Perhaps you could arrange some phone calls or webcam chats with the family, and/or ask your parents to have a chat with the family as well?

And if you prefer to have a contract or written agreement, you can also ask for this. It is usually recommended, though not all host families do provide one.

And remember: never send any money to a host family or to anyone that they put you in contact with - because this is a sure sign of a scam.
