Scams offering fake Au Pair positions
by eschereye Sat Jan 19, 2013 12:01 am
I recently posted a profile on enannysource.com. I haven't found any reason to believe they are an illegitimate site, but it is obvious that scammers use email addresses posted to pick up new victims. I received an email from "Greg Williams". This is the header, I believe. Let me know if there is anything that is personal and should be edited, please!

Hello Greg,

Thanks so much for getting in contact with me! I hope you're doing well. I would love to know more about this position. I wasn't able to find your profile on the website, and would welcome any information. How old is your daughter? What kind of help are you looking for? Is she is school yet? Is this a part time or full time position that you're looking to fill? When are you looking for your nanny/babysitter to start? Please let me know what you would like to know about me as well. I look forward to hearing from you!

Thanks for getting back to me,i'm on vacation to UK but will be back by next week so i will want everything to be fixed before i and my daughter get back.my daughter is 3 years old and you will baby sit are from 9am to 3pm,i will like to know how much you charge by hour.my daughter is well trained and not allergy to anything.she is okay with dogs and cats.i will also like to know if you will be able to baby sit her at your place or you will come over to my place to baby sit her.if you will baby sit her at your place i will drop her 9am in the morning and pick her up 3pm.you can also calculate the amount you charge per hour and get to me with the total amount of that for a week.i will want you to tell me your attitude towards kids and your experience with kids that you have baby sit in the past.hope to hear back from you soon.

I replied letting him know briefly about my experience, what I'd charge, and where I could watch the kid. Really though, it wasn't very detailed, and having been a nanny twice before I knew any reasonable parent would need more information before deciding on long term childcare.

He got back to me:

I'm so pleased to read back from you again and i must tell you that i'm finally convinced about everything you said about yourself.i'm okay with your charges.like i said in my previous email that i'm on vacation for now but will be back next week so a check will be issue out to you which will deduct $260 as upfront payment to know how serious i want you to work with my daughter and the rest money will be for my daughter's items that she will be needing when she is with you.these are her lovely toys and car seat.i have a particular store that you will get the items from so all you needed to do after you must gotten the check you deduct your upfront which is $260 and send the rest money to store manager so that the items can be send to you before i and my daughter arriver.i will want you to get back to me with full name, contact address and your cell number so that the payment can be issue out to you without any delay.i await your responses.

I wrote back now pretty positive that it was a scam:

Thanks again for getting back to me. I don't need any money up front and would feel dishonest accepting it. Please send your check to the store and I can pick up any items you wish from there.

He replied:

I understand that but i just want you to handle everything for me before i and my daughter get back so if you don't mind you can get back to me with your full name, contact address and your cell number so that the check can be issue out to you.i await your responses.

I shoot off a quick email in response:

I appreciate the trust you put in me. I think this position may require more attention than I originally thought. My current rate is $600 a week. Can you make that happen? Also, what do you do for a living?

He responds back pretty quickly:

If that is what you want,i will do anything for my daughter cause her mom is late. I'm a civil engineer.

I wrote back that I would need $3000 a week to make this arrangement (just to see ridiculous amount he would agree to in order to get my personal details) and he didn't write back. Guess I was pushing back too much. :)

Anyway, I'm sure this information has been related somewhere on this site, but just in case it hasn't I thought I'd post my experience here. Thanks all for the great work you do here. Hope it can prevent someone from getting scammed!

Oh, I forgot to mention, he attached a picture of a man and his daughter. It seems like it must have been taken from somewhere on the internet, or something so I didn't want to post it on here without cause. Is there any benefit from others seeing the picture they are using to help the scam? Should I post it with some editing to protect the innocent? Let me know if it would help in any way!

Welcome to Scamwarners and you've spotted a clear scam.

The cheque you receive would be counterfeit or a fake and that's why they want to get you to pay some money back in cash. It's a very common scam, which is why I have a note in my siggy line. Passing a counterfeit cheque through your account can cause you all sorts of problems, as well as losing any money you pay out.

The English used in the mail is typical of a scammer based in Africa.

It's not your personal details he's after, just your cash. Undoubtedly he's contacted many other people already, and some will fall for it I regret, so it does help o publish details. They can polish their English but certain ways they have to play the scam never change.

One problem is that they are liable to leave telling you about the repayment part until the end, making you waste a lot of time and effort, and sometimes the fact you've invested effort in it can make you incautious.

CAR ADVERTS - If a car seller mentions escrow - he's scamming you Never ever for any reason pay anything until you have seen and inspected the vehicle
