Hi, how do you know if it´s scam or not?? this family wrote me on 17th may and the last message they sent me was contract letter of employement. thanks for your answer
by Dotti Thu May 23, 2013 2:42 pm
If you are asking about one of the "families" listed in this thread, they are definitely scams.

The writing tells us that they are African, NOT British.
The weekly salary is WAY too high for what an au pair is paid.

There are other signs too, but these ones above are enough to tell us for certain anyway.

If it is from someone different, please post the emails they sent you and we can tell you.

Unfortunately, it's another scam.

The English is African, not American.
The scammer has absolutely NO idea how US au pair programs actually work, and has quoted a salary that is way too high.

this is really bad, I can´t discern real AE or BE from this African, ´cause I´m not from UK... and could you help me where I can find real work for summer? I´m actually disgusted about this :?
by TerranceBoyce Fri May 24, 2013 2:10 pm
Forgive me if I'm blunt christina1, but you're making the mistake of deciding you want to be an au pair without checking out what you need to become one.

You need to know what training and qualifications you need and whether you can get a visa and how you go about getting one.

You can only get employment as an au pair in the USA if you are a member of certain au pair agencies, and that costs money and will require you to have certain qualifications. Any offer that doesn't come through those agencies for the USA is a scam.

In the UK, if you live outside the EU, the people who can work as an au pair is very limited and restricted to certain youth schemes.

The fact is that it is likely you are looking for a job you can never get. That's why you're getting so many scam offers.

If I'm wrong - I apologise, but this is probably why you're only getting scam offers. Is there an agency you can trust in your own country that can get you a job abroad ?

CAR ADVERTS - If a car seller mentions escrow - he's scamming you Never ever for any reason pay anything until you have seen and inspected the vehicle
by Dotti Fri May 24, 2013 3:09 pm
As Terrance said, understanding the regulations is very important.

If what you are looking for is a summer job, then ANY offer you get from someone claiming to be an American family will be a scam.

1) In the US, an au pair job is a 12 month commitment, not a summer job. There are required training sessions you have to attend through the sponsor agencies before you can start, and you must go to school as well.
2) Even if that weren't true...
American schools break for the summer relatively early. Most American schools will be out for the summer within the next 2 weeks. American parents needing summer childcare started looking weeks ago, and will have already made their arrangements at this time. It is far too late for an American family to try to arrange summer help , especially with someone overseas, at this time.

thanks, so i have to register in some agencies? i am registered in aupair.com since last year, because my friend found there her host family, but i got from this site also scam offer
by Dotti Fri May 24, 2013 3:24 pm
For UK you don't have to be registered with an agency (though it might help.)

For US you do have to be sponsored by one of the government approved agencies. No visa is possible without this. http://j1visa.state.gov/participants/
