Hi there! So I posted an ad on craigslist offering my self-defense services. A man emailed me from [email protected]. I searched his name and it brought me to this website, where you had a similar letter from him. I already gave him my cellphone # and he has my name from my email address. A couple days after the email, someone started using my debit card to buy things from all over the US. Was this him? What should I do? I emailed him saying I could not train him. Should I email him again and say that I know he is a scammer, and to leave me alone or I will contact the police? -Thanks in advance! - Mike

Hello mikeXY!

Unless you gave the scammer your debit card details it's probably just a coincidence. The scammer looks to be a check overpayment scammer. So in your case he would offer to pay for the services (which he probably does not even understand what it is) with a check. His "secretary" would acidently pay too much and he would ask you to send the over amount to him via Western Union after you deposit the check. More than likely the check would initially clear but later your bank would contact you telling you the check was fake and you would be responsible for paying all the money back including the money you sent to the scammer.

Just stop all communications and he will go away eventually.

Ok thank you so much for the quick reply! I can't tell you how relieved I am to know what he was up to. I already sent him an email telling him that I alerted the police, the FBI, etc...and telling him to leave me alone. I hope that doesn't provoke him into antagonizing me even further. If it does I will let you know.
Thanks so much again!

Folks,

I got the same email but here's what's interesting: When it was sent to me it was from [email protected] . It was only after I hit reply that I saw [email protected] appear. It's tricky because there is no fraud warning for the former but there is one for the latter. Perhaps ScamWarners can create something where it will come up in the search results.

The email was recieved in reply to an ad I put in Chicago on 4/3/12. It said:

Hello,
Good day,I will like to know if you can be taking my daughter your
lesson while i am at work in your city, I'm moving to your area
because I'm having contract with the Environmental Protection Agency
in the state for 4 weeks,i will want you to email me back if you can
teach my daughter (Janet).she is just 14 yrs Old and kindly get back
to me with the total charges for the 2hr in a day of 3 days in a week
for good 4 weeks

Fortunately, i got another email stating almost the exact verbatum hours later from "Walter Smitt" and between that and the broken English, my suspicions arose. If it is the same guy, there is a lot online about Walter Smitt.

At any rate, thanlk you for this service. it is genuinely appreciated.

Welcome Dave,

Perhaps ScamWarners can create something where it will come up in the search results.

By posting the information, you have just taken care of that. The google bots will pick this up in the next few hours, and that address will lead people here.

It's not unusual for a scammer to use a hacked or phished email address to send out scam letters, and then have a different reply address. If they trip any automatic spam controls when sending out their scam emails, the address may be frozen or closed. By using a different reply-to address, they avoid being affected if this happens.

This guy responded to an advertisement I placed on Craigslist for personal fitness training. The sneaky bastard tailored it, knowing a I was in high school, and claimed it was for his 14 year old daughter.
He used these two emails:

I got nearly the same email from Rose Aumada [email protected]. Smells like a scam to me. Thanks for posting the full text, it helped me to find this post right away. If we are all getting the same email many states apart, it is clearly a scam.
