Craigslist, Ebay and other online buying/selling scams.

Welcome Pleasantly Blue.

I'm not sure if you meant your response to be sarcasm, or a joke, or if it is a reflection of your true beliefs, but just to make sure we are all on the same page here:

The person who sent you that email does not have a car. "She" is most likely not a woman at all. The person behind the email is most likely a young adult African male. The name and address are either fake, or he copied a real person's name and address. He is posting lots of ads for items he doesn't own, with the intention of convincing people to send money in hopes of getting a "too good to be true" deal. In the end, he plans to simply steal the money and disappear.

I saw the ad for a Yaris for R25000 online. Unbelievable right? But I fell for it. Thought I was doing something good getting my mom a car for a bargain price. My dad didn't trust it but I convinced him. I was even sent an id copy- name Martin Beylefeld. But I can now tell people the next step that happens.

We received the invoice from ebay which tells you how to make payment. We had to pay via moneygram at bidvest bank. I sent proof of payment through to him. We paid him on 4/11/2011. He said we would receive the car on 7/11/2011.
These were the next emails:

Hello....

I am sorry but I cannot sell you the car for R25,000 because my ex wife will not allow me. She told me that if I want to sell the car she wants R40,000 for it so if you still want the car you will need to send me R15,000 more. Do not worry because I have a purchase protection account and you will receive a refund of R15,000 from eBay after you will receive the car. If you dont trust please contact eBay, you will find instructions on how to contact them in the payment confirmation. Please complete the payment tomorrow so we can close this deal. Once the payment of R15,000 will be done the car will be delivered to you in 36 hours. Please make the transfer like today.
Thanks

No, sorry I cannot pay more. need an immediate refund of the R25000
plus any fees. you should have spoken to your ex-wife first before you
said i must make a payment. My dad is going to be so angry.

We had an agreement and invoice. Why can't you put in the R15000
because it would be refunded anyway if we did pay the extra. We don't
have R15000 extra, but we need a car. My dad said he didn't trust this
whole story and I guess he was proven right.

No, the last payment must be completed tomorrow. I will not respond to your emails if not. Thankyou!

These people whoever they are need to be caught!!!

The wheel does turn though.

Please be very careful.

Dear All,

[email protected] is now operating in the JunkMail (South Africa)

There is many adds offering a Jurgens Caravan - URGENT SALE!! for under R30,000.

It's the same person (computer app possibly) that is scamming people out there.

The first email is send saying (with no name, no contact details)

[i]
Hello,

The price is R30,000. This is the final price and there will be no additional charges. The caravan looks and runs great. I am selling the caravan so cheap because I am in United Kingdom with my new job and I just finished a divorce. I am a VerifiedTrader so the transaction will be done through eBay. If you're ready for this purchase, I need to know your full name and address and email, as soon as I have them I will start the official procedure, and eBay will notify you about this. eBay will send you an Invoice with all the info you will need to complete the transaction. Also a 10 days refund policy will be included so if you will not like the caravan or if something will be wrong you will receive your money back in the same day without any charges from your side. Thanks
[i]

After this, and it does not matter what you have written in your email, the replay will read:

Hi there,

Sorry you cannot see the caravan because I am not in the country but a 10 days refund policy will be included so if you will not like the caravan you will receive your money back. The caravan will be delivered to your home address after you will complete the payment. Delivery time will be 2 days. It comes with insurance covered by me of course until you take the ownership, RWC, keys, clear title, valid road license, full revision and all the papers signed so you can easy transfer the caravan on your name. All the costs will be paid by me. I don't have a outstanding amount on the caravan at a bank or financial agency as I paid cash for it. I have two more persons interested in buying the caravan so please send me your full name and address if you are ready to buy it. Thank you!

The last email will read:

Please send me your full name and address and you will receive all the transaction details from eBay. Thanks

The email is addressed from [email protected]: IP 64.12.78.142 that originates from NY (USA), and my gut feeling here its a computer app.

Please pass this on to all bulletin boards and warn people please !!!!

I leave the scammer with the word of my Lord: Ezekiel 3:16&17 - And this is My WARNING to YOU SCAMMER!

When I (the Lord God) say to a wicked man, 'You will surely die,' and you do not warn him or speak out to dissuade him from his evil ways in order to save his life, that wicked man will die for his sin, and I will hold you accountable for his blood.

Subject: Re: 2003 MINI Cooper Listing

I have a low price for my 2003 Mini Cooper S ($ 2,800 including delivery to your home address ), because I want to sell the car very quickly. My husband died 2 months ago (he had a heart attack) and this car brings me bad memories and that's the reason that I want to sell it. I along with my daughter decided to sell the house and we moved to my sister in Nebraska. Unfortunately I can't conclude this transaction personally because my work involves a lot of travelling but I left everything prepared for the sale. If you are really interested in purchasing, please email me with your details (name and address) for the shipping. The car is in perfect working condition. Title Clear. Here are the pictures with my car:

Well, he's alive and well and has moved east to Kentucky. My email was word for word as others. The dead husband, traveling, moving.... I can't believe he expects you to buy something sight unseen. He needs to be caught!
by carl553 Thu Dec 22, 2011 5:44 am
I am his latest victim!
I found a "Jurgens Caravan" for R15000.00
All the mails exactly the same as the others, and I actually paid the bastard the money. After wards he wanted more, before he can deliver.
When I told him I can't pay anymore, he replies:
"Okey, you will receive your money back in 3 years. Bye"

What is there that we can do to this guy?

This is exactly what happened to me:
Morning Ryno,
• The Caravan was advertised on Junkmail for R12000.00
• I emailed you, and your reply to me on 20/12/2011 at 11:06 AM was as follows: “The price is R15000. This is the final price and there will be no additional charges….. you will receive your money back in the same day without any charges from your side.”
• At 11:24 AM on 20/12/2011 I received an invoice from ebay for R15000.00
• At 11:42 AM you send me an email, confirming that the caravan will be delivered to my home 2 days after payment has been received.
• Payment was made on 21/12/2011 at 09h12 for R15000.00 including cost, as per the invoice from ebay, and your email confirming same.
• You received the payment in London, and provided positive identification
• You confirmed payment received at 10:47 AM on 21/12/2011
• You also confirmed that the caravan will be delivered by Friday at 16h00
• At 13:30 you send me a mail that you want another R15000, which is contradictory to the agreement and the invoice provided. We had an agreement for R15000.
• You send me a mail, saying that if I do not pay the difference, I will get my money back in 3 years.
• All terms set by you in the original communication was met by me. You also said that I will receive my purchase in 2 days after payment is received. You received payment at 10:30am on 21/12/2011. Delivery should be done by 12h00 on 23/12/2011.
• I gave all above info and documentation, as well as a copy of your ID to my attorneys. They have instruction to continue with a fraud case if you do not meet your part of the agreement. They have affiliates in UK as well, seeing that the transaction took place between South Africa and UK.
• I am sure your new employer in the UK will appreciate the info that you have a criminal record, and that you are committing fraudulent transactions.

I also have a copy of his ID document (Don't know if it is fake or not)
Ryno Merwe id 860808 6314 08.

What can we do?

Carl

Welcome to Scamwarners Carl. I'm sorry you were scammed.
What can we do?

This isn't what you want to hear, but there is little effective action that you can take. You have to accept that he won't be caught and that your money is gone. Sorry. Internet scamming is on such a scale, that law enforcement is powerless. Publicity and education is all there is.

by carl553 Thu Dec 22, 2011 7:02 am
The delivery address where I had to send the money is as follows:
Ryno Merwe
Howard rd39/12
SE25 5DD
London
United Kingdom
He has send me a copy of his South African ID Document,
I am sure this man could be traced. Is there a way to ask for Proof of Delivery, from who ever recieved the money. That person should surely have provided Western Union with positive identification?
:yikes:
by AlanJones Thu Dec 22, 2011 7:48 am
Unfortunately, there is no way to trace the person who collected the money. They will be using fake ID (if any ID at all) or will have arranged for the destination of the money to be changed from the UK to whereever they actually are. There is no proof of delivery with Western Union, the recipient goes into a WU office (often they are shops) and shows ID and is given the money. No copies are kept of the ID that is presented.

Please do not tell scammers that they are listed here - it will take them seconds to change their fake details and their new details will not be listed for any future victims to find.

Lets track and bring down this guy.
His emails can lead us straight to his doorstep.
