Emails from scammers:

Hi,

Thank you for your interest. I have no idea when you sent this inquiry. It only showed up today!

The vehicle is available for sale, its well maintained, accident free, never been damaged, garage kept and not winter driven. I'm the only owner and the car was serviced since day one. The price is $29,390 and it has 49,525 km. I am sorry for my late reply I am busy because I retired and just moved to my wife's home country, Germany. I wanted to take the vehicle with me but my wife decided against it. So we left the vehicle at a shipping company into a sealed container ready to be shipped. I will pay all fees to have it delivered. You will also receive all necessary documents in order to finalize the purchase. Email me back if you're interested and have further questions. Serious inquires only! No internet payments accepted.

Thank you,
Pier F. Mezzera

Here's the next round of the scam

Hello again , please excuse the length of my letter, and take a few minutes to read it.
First of all please allow me to explain you more clear in order avoid any misunderstandings: I'm the only owner and the car was serviced since day one, as I've said in my first email I'm in Germany and the car is stored into a sealed container at the shipping company in Sydney, (NS) Canada. The shipping company will not unseal the container for viewers or ship it without a signed contract between buyer/seller. In such transactions the shipping company act as a third party with their escrow bank account service for payments. The funds will be released to me upon delivery and inspection. That means you won't send me directly any money!
I really understand your doubts but If you want I can ask the shipping company to contact you directly with the vehicle documents you need like:
1. Copy of current vehicle ownership.
2. Copy of Ontario UVIP.
3. Copy of Car Proof Report.
4 Copy of Safety Inspection Certificate and Ontario Drive Clean Report
5. My Driver's license will be provided also to be sure I'm real person and I really own the vehicle (I'm not a scam bag and I won't risk such low things!).

Please understand that I'm not forcing you to do anything that you don't like and if you don't want to buy my car anymore, there is no problem for me, because at this price I will easily find a new buyer (I have I have had a ton of interest in this car). It is normal to be suspicious, but please take a good look at this situation: The delivery will take 4 to 6 days depending on your location and it's not a problem because I can do it at no cost for you(again the shipping is FREE).
If what I propose is not OK with you please find a local car and deal in person!
Please email me back ASAP your decision.
Thanks
Pier F. Mezzera

Welcome to Scamwarners johndoe-johndoe.

Your post is very interesting and it suggests that associates of the gang that infest Autotrader UK and most online vehicle selling forums in the UK are also operating in Canada too. It's no surprise as they're always going to be looking for new areas where no one knows about them and the pickings will be better.

Autotrader UK is my speciality and I pick and report fraudulent adverts daily, though they have declined more recently, largely down to the work we do here. At the height of their operations they could post several hundred fraudulent adverts on a daily basis virtually swamping the ad site.

Though the wording isn't the same as they use in the UK, and it has been adapted for the Canadian market, the general tactics are the same and surprisingly they do use some exact phrases from their UK scams.

In the UK the adverts are either posted as private individuals in which case they must pay for them using compromised cards or pre-paid cards, or they hack vehicle dealer accounts on Autotrader UK and I would be interested to know which tactic they are using in Canada.

I'd also be interested to know how they're receiving stolen money - through a local bank account or one in Europe. I suspect that by mentioning the connection with Germany that this may be where the money laundering bank account is located.

I won't have time to work on the Canadian site as much as I do the UK one, but I may pop across to get an idea how they're operating in your neck of the woods.

Autotrader/Pay Pal Scam
So I have a car listed for sale on the Autotrader (it is also in the classifieds on this site - 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse) and it has been listed there for a couple weeks now. All of sudden this morning I get a text message from a guy in the states wanting to buy my car. I have had some interest, but not much so even though I was sceptical I thought I would hear the guy out.

We finalized a price and he asked if he could pay me through Pay Pal then once I recieved the money he would line up a shipping company to come and pick it up. He was not able to come as he was at "sea". But I know how Pay Pal works and it is legit so I figured hey that sounds good, I will have my money then the car goes, starting to sound kinda legit.

I asked him to call me to discuss details of the shipping as I work on the road and would need to be home to allow the shipper to pick up the car. He said he couldn't as he was at "sea" and service was bad that is why he could only text. So I said ok, well send me the money and once I have it I will let you know and we can arrange the shipping.

About 30 mins later I have 3 emails stating the money has been sent to me but is being held pending me sending $800 through Western Union to the shipping company. We never discussed me paying for the shipping, but he did add the $800 on top of the price of the car. So I went to my Pay Pal account and checked to see if the transaction showed there as pending as well. There was nothing showing in my Pay Pal account.

I called Pay Pal to ask them about this and the first thing they said was DO NOT SEND THE $800! They informed me that this is a scam and that no transaction had occured through Pay Pal. They said they do not deal with Western Union and the individual was only trying to get me to send him $800. They asked me to send the email to their fraud department for investigation. I did so. They replied back within an hour and confirmed it was a scam.

Pay Pal also informed me that they would never send an email and in it address it to my email ex: Dear [email protected], they would have wrote Dear Joe Blow. This is one of the first things to look for in a scam email dealing with Pay Pal.

Gladly I was not screwed out of any money. I also text the guy back explaining what was going on and that I sent his emails to the fraud department. Then I said no car will be sent, no $800 sent as no money was sent to me. He replied back with "Thanks for wasting my time, I guess I will have to cancel the payments". I then replied "Actually thanks for wasting my time. You can stop the charade. You are nothing but a scam artist" I have not heard anything since.

Anyway, be careful out there as there are people continuously trying to take the easy way out in life by screwing the hard working people. Hopefully this will help others who may run into a similar circumstance.

Cheers,

Welcome to Scamwarners,

Post the scammers fake name and email address from him also the one from the fake Paypal.

In this scam the scammer is NOT interested in your car. He wants to steal your money. No one will ever come to pick up the vehicle. It is all a scam with the scammer playing all roles. There is nothing to report. The scammer is using a free email address and a fake name.

The scammer wanted to send you a fake Paypal payment. He has a fake Paypal address from a free email provider. The payment would look real. Its a screen shot of a fake payment. He then will instruct you to pay a mover, shipper or agent. The fake Paypal email from the scammer would say that your Paypal funds will be released when you send the scammer (mover, agent or shipper) money via Western Union or Money Gram. In reality Paypal would never hold your funds.

Log into Paypal directly without any links to check for monies received or call Paypal directly from the number on their site.

If you are selling electronics, Cell phones or computers then the scammer is trying to steal your "item". Your fake funds will be released when you send the scammer a scan copy of a receipt showing you mailed your item.

This same scam works with fake check and money orders. You and your bank will think they are real. After you cash the fake check. Days or weeks later your bank will inform you of the fraud. Your bank will have you repay the monies. Possibly close your account for fraud and report you to Law Enforcement.

The best thing to do is to sell in person face to face in a public place.

Please contacta moferatorstor if you have a question or information about this post.

Please do not tell the scammer he is posted here.

Please remember the fallen. https://www.odmp.org/

Sorry, I didn't mean to be 'snippy' Julian20015, but it's been a busy night chasing down scammers on Autotrader UK.

What you mention is quite a common scam, and one that will catch out the unwary, and it's always worth repeating the warning because there are scammers out there just running down the listings in the hope that they'll hook victims. To them it's free money.

The best thing is that you didn't get scammed but it's a pain having to handle all this stuff when all you're trying to do is something as simple as selling your car.

Take care.
