Craigslist, Ebay and other online buying/selling scams.

Selling my car on autotrader and gumtree. New to this. I am pretty suspicious this may be a scam, possibly paypal orientated. He doesn't want to see the car first and has agreed my asking price with no haggling. Hes also called Roberto Calos and his written English is a bit weird. I found this site by googling autotrader scams.

This is the conversation so far. Advice appreciated. The more I read his responses the dodgier it looks. :|

R"Just viewed listing and will like to purchase it .I will like to know
if is still available for sale and get back to me with the last
price...

ME"Hi Roberto,

I only put the advert in yesterday via Autotrader and Gumtree. You are the first to show interest. The price remains at £7800, but I am open to reasonable offers. I have just spent over £600 to get the rear brakes and MOT done. If you would like to view and test drive let me know, will need to arrange a time. If you wish to drive the car please bring your driving licence and insurance docs. I am happy for you to drive but would accompany you. I suggest viewing / driving during daylight hours at my home address.

Hope you remain interested.

Cheers,"
R"Hello
Thanks for getting back to me,i will like to know the present of
thecar, the current pictures of it,and why exactly did you wanna sell
it,are you encountering any problem with it? ok so how much is the
final price offer?Hope to read back from you soon.."
ME"Hi,

I think the car is in good condition for a 2007 car. I bought it new, so one owner. Has a few small marks on the body, nothing major, not been in any accidents. The photos in the adverts are from last week, so current. I am selling the car to save money. Its a great car but it does like petrol, tyres and tax discs. I have had no problems with the car, the only expenditure has been on tyres, brakes, servicing. As I said I am looking for £7800. Its ready to go and has a full year MOT and 7 months tax. I checked the price with similar cars on Autotrader and my vehicle is much lower mileage than the other 07 models. I reckon I've set a fair price. I suggest you come and see for yourself and make me an offer.

R"Thanks for your mail. am satisfied with your advert price,as am
requesting this transaction should be done via PayPal so the PayPal
charges is on me,If my offer is accepted send me your PayPal email and
your name including your phone# or send me money request so i can pay
you right away I am busy at work and do not have much time around
me.Make sure you get back to me so that we can arrange for pick up as
i will like the item to be picked at your residence location,so no
shipping...."

HI spudgun, it's a scam, it sounded reasonable till this part

Make sure you get back to me so that we can arrange for pick up as
i will like the item to be picked at your residence location,so no
shipping...."
"

I'll put money up that he is going to get his *shipper* to collect the car, after you split the paypal payment, which will no doubt be either fake or done with a stolen credit card, half and half for you and you send the remainder to the *shipper* by Western Union.

Either way, you will lose your money and still have the car.

Scam

It's a scam.

He will send fake paypal emails, claiming he paid for the car plus extra for shipping, and stating the money is on hold until you wire the extra to the (fake) shipper.

He has paid nothing, and there is no shipper. His goal is simply to disappear with the "shipping" cash.

It is important to note that paypal does not hold money pending shipping, inspection, or anything else. If someone really sends you money via paypal, you can go to paypal.com, login, and see it in your account. If you supposedly received money, and you don't see it in your account, it isn't real.

Update, hes still sounding more reasonable than some of the other scammers, not as crazy.

Me"Hi Roberto,

It surprises me a little that you are willing to purchase without seeing the car first and you aren't negotiating the price. If I am to go through with the sale I would be grateful for a bit more information about you. Why can't you come and view the car? What work do you do? Why do you want to use Paypal when there are large fees involved? I would love to be able to sell my car so easily for my asking price but I do feel a little worried, I would appreciate soem reassurance.

Thanks,"

Here is another one.

Hello
Thanks for the prompt response.. I am ready to buy it now for my dad
and i am not in town at the moment as i am a Network instillation
manager and due to the nature of my work, It hard to make a phone
calls and visiting of website are restricted but i squeezed out time
to check this advert and text you an email regarding it. I really want
it to be a surprise for my dad so i wont let him know anything about
it until it gets delivered to him, i am sure he will be more than
happy with it. I insisted on paypal because i don't have access to my
bank account online as i don't have internet banking, but i can pay
from my paypal account, as i have my bank a/c attached to it, i will
need you to give me your paypal email address and the price so i can
make the payments asap for it and please if you don't have paypal
account yet, it is very easy to set up, go to www.paypal.com and get
it set up, after you have set it up i will only need the e-mail
address you use for registration with paypal so as to put the money
through. I have a pick up agent that will come and pick it after i
have made the payments...And i will like you to send me more picture

Thanks.

Linda.

This is your best action. It is great that you know what a craigslist scam looks like now.
