Craigslist, Ebay and other online buying/selling scams.

Just reporting another scammer - not sure if they got my details from carsales.com.au or ebay.com.au, but it is exactly the same stuff as you have all commented on.

In this instance the email address texted to me was/is for a Bill Owen and is [email protected]

Love the fact that it so clearly should have been "christ..." but they couldn't spell it right in their hurry to scam. For the hell of it I did answer the text just to see which version of the scam would show up and it was...

"I am OK with the asking price.due to the nature of my job and location...i will not be able to come for inspection,am a very busy type as i work long hours everyday,i have gone through your advertisement and i am satisfied with it.As for the payment..i will be paying you via the fastest and secure way to pay online(PayPal).I have a private courier agent that will come for the pick up after the payment have been made ...so no shipping included. You can now send me your PayPal email so i can pay in right away and also include your address in your reply. If you don't have a paypal account, you can easily set up one...log on to http://www.paypal.com.au and sign up.all i really need from you is the exact details.Kindly delete the posting as am definitely buying it from you and it would be sad for me to make the payment only to be informed of the its sale.
Thanks."

I answered with "I won't use PayPal or any other like site, but thank you for your interest" - see I'm a polite person normally, and received this back....

"How i wish to come and view it and come or send my agent by cash but am out of state now....i am a marine engineer sealing,am in a ship right now at Bermuda........due to the distance as i am in Bermuda presently..I can only make payment through this form of payment{PayPal} because i dont have access to my bank account online or any other form of payment as i dont have internet banking my bank a/c is attached to to my PayPal account, i will need you to give me your PayPal email address so i can make the payments asap and pls if you dont have PayPal account yet, it is very easy to set up, go to http://www.paypal.com.au and get it set up.My address is 28 Onslow street, South Perth, 6151, WA,My licence no: is 020641527..With the issue of my details, transferring the name of ownership and signing of all paperwork will be done by the pick up agent so you don't have to worry about that.,as soon as you send me your PayPal email i will make the payment and you will be notify in your email that the payment have been made.Very easy. For example my PayPal email is [email protected] Send me your PayPal email now so i can pay in"

New wheeze is to also quote home addresses and licence numbers... Just too cute hahahaha. But pushy sods, aren't they.

Welcome to Scamwarners lok12,

Majority of these scammers are not fluent in English, spelling or composition. They are educated in third world countries. For this, we allow them to remain uneducated in their scam attempts. People are able to see the mistakes that they make. The writer of this email is actually supposed to be their best group/gang writer. We allow them to remain clueless. If we point out their mistakes, they will correct them and may get a victim.

BTW: Could you please post the phone number he text'd from.

Thank you for posting the script and email address. Well done.

Bryon

Hi guys, Just thought I had better sign up ,to add to this thread .Google bought me here after an employee was contacted by the Bill dude . My employee had an add on "Gumtree" and received both emails , word for word as above .
Also he is now using " [email protected]" aswell as the "[email protected]" .
Being able to show my worker this page finally clicked with him that it was a scammer.
So thanks again to those that take the time to post this info as it saved him loosing his motorcycle to a very dishonest person .
Ps we have also sent an email to paypal advising them of his account .
Thanks guys and girls . :)

Welcome to Scamwarners jeffrz,

Thank you for leading your employee here. It is a scam. However, the scammer does not want the Motorcycle. He wants to steal your employee's money. The scammer does not have a Paypal account and if he did it is a stolen account.

The scammer wanted to send your employee a fake Paypal payment. He would do this with an another free email account making it appear that it was sent by Paypal. The email will contain a very good realistic looking screenshot of a payment made. The scammer will send more fake money than the asking price for the motorcycle. Then the scammer will tell your employee to pay the shipper, mover, agent or ect with the fake over payment. It is an overpayment scam. The fake Paypal email will say that your funds will be released once you provide proof that you wired money to shipper/mover/agent (Scammer) via Western Union, Money Gram or Bank Transfer.

Paypal would never hold your money in this situation. Always check your Paypal account directly without any links. In doubt call Paypal.

Advise your employee that this same scam is used with fake checks and money orders also. The checks/money order make look real and cashed by your bank. Day or weeks later you are notified of the fraud. The money will have to be re-paid back to the bank. The bank may close your account and notify Law Enforcement of fraudulent deposit.

It is best to sell locally face to face with cash.
