Craigslist, Ebay and other online buying/selling scams.

Hi all! Great forum -- doing a little bit of digging here has potentially saved me a good amount of money!

I just sold something online, and since the buyer seemed a tad sketchy (no previous feedback + located in Mexico) I required that he pay via bank wire transfer only instead of Paypal. I forwarded my bank wire details over to him, and within 12 hours, the money was in my bank account, and from what I understand, bank wire transfers aren't reversible, so I should now be technically safe to ship the item to him.

However, I do still have some concerns since it's a ~$1000 item:
1.) In my online bank statement, it says that the deposit was a "Branch Transaction: Credit Memo". I was expecting it to be more specific -- at least, saying who it was by, and that it was specifically a bank wire transfer.
2.) Through my preliminary research on this excellent forum, it seems that "bank account flashing" is a common occurrence, and seems to fit my situation quite well. This is what I am very worried about.
3.) He seems really urgent to want the item, and his English is very poor -- although not really indicators of it being a scam, something about the whole thing just seems fishy. His name is Russian, he emails using a Russian email, preliminary Googling for his Russian name shows that he's from Armenia, but he wants me to ship to Mexico?

I'm also now in a weird predicament:
1.) I have the required funds sitting in my bank account, and I now feel obligated to ship the item out to him as soon as possible. If he's a legitimate buyer, I become the villain here, and since it can take months for the deposit to be deemed "safe" enough for me to ship, I can't really just hold him out for that long
2.) At the same time I have no means of just calling this whole thing off, since if I send some money back to him I'm in even a worse situation than I am currently in.
3.) His initial emails seem somewhat legitimate -- he haggled on the shipping cost and the shipping options a few times before committing on a final cost compromise.

Is there any way I can easily verify whether this is legitimate or not? Will my bank be able to give me a guarantee on this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

One thing that seems to indicate that it isn't necessarily a scam though is that preliminary research for the buyer's name (same name as the shipment recipient) shows that he's a celloist/musician, and the item I'm selling is a sort-of-niche $1000 studio recording device. If he's truly trying to scam someone, I figure it would be more in his interest to go for a bigger ticket, easier to offload item (like a laptop, iPad, etc.) over some recording equipment that only a select few would want to purchase.

I found this

A bank credit memo is an item on a company’s bank statement that increases a company’s checking account balance. A bank debit memo is an item on the bank statement that reduces the company’s checking account balance. Since these items are already on the bank statement, the only adjustment that could be required is in the company’s accounting records. The old rule for the bank reconciliation “Put it where it isn’t” means that the bank’s credit memo amount must be added to the company’s accounting records, if it is not yet in the company’s accounts. Since the bank credit memo increased the checking account balance, the company’s Cash account will have to be debited and another account will need to be credited. For example, if the bank statement shows a credit memo for $100 for interest earned, the company will need to have a debit of $100 in its Cash account and will need a credit of $100 in Interest Revenue or Interest Income.

However I would suggest that you phone your bank and check with them, whether the funds are there if they are I think you have to ship the item

Hello akwok

Contact you banks fraud department and ask them the same questions. They will be able to tell you if the money can be reversed by the person who made the transfer.

It is ALWAYS a scam
If the pet seller or shipper asks for money to be sent via Western Union, Money Gram, any brand of gift card. Walmart To Walmart , Zelle , PayPal friends and family option, or mentions Cameroon

Hi akwok, Something does not sound right about the whole thing, especially the part about the person is in Russia but wants the item shipped to Mexico. Did you try searching the name and along with the word Scam or Fraud to see if that them is tied to any other reported scams? Are you able to track where his emails were sent from by checking the headers on his emails?

Check with your bank and specifically ask if it was a check deposit or a cash transfer into your account. If it was a check deposit, it is most likely fraud. Ask the bank for advice on what to do next.

When you say that you forwarded your bank transfer details to them. Does that mean you sent them your bank routing number and your account number? Make sure your account has not been compromised.
