The same thing happened to me I was trying to sell my scooter on kijiji and I got emailed the same thing. I got a text from this guy saying he was offering me $700 over the asking price and my reply was why are you offer $700 over the asking price? Seem too good to be true.

This was his email reply to me.

Hi Mate
just thinking you might have had some buyer's interested in buying your Vehicle and i think the best way to outbid them is by offering you additional 700 to your asking price on the ad, Well am actually purchasing it for my Brother at home to have something to move around with when am not available but i won't be available to come for the inspection my self due to where i am presently . I do have a pick-up agent that will be contacting you on where and when the pick-up will take place after have completed the payment my self .

If you don't mind can you please tell me a little bit more about the present mechanical condition, how often you do the servicing and the history ? I will be waiting for your response then if we come to an agreement i will proceed with the payment immediately.

Steve

My Reply
Hi Steve,

Mechanically the scooter is good. At 850 km there was a problem with the clutch and it was still under warranty so it was totally replaced. The only thing that I really had a problem with was the trunk. I had the bike for about a week and as I was going down the road the top part flew off. The dealership replaced it but then a little while later I had a similar problem so I just took the trunk off and didn't replace it because I didn't really use it anyway, I always used a backpack anyways. Oil change was done at 300 km and then again when the clutch was changed. It will need another oil change within the next little while just because it hasn't been run very much in the last 6 to 8 months.

The helmet that I have for this scooter is suitable because it fits in the storage space under the seat so your brother wouldn't have to carry it when he parks the bike. It was actually my spare helmet so it's only been worn once. I also have a cable lock that has an alarm on it as well. For these I would like $100 dollars a piece. I you don't want them that's ok I'll just keep them.

Payment - I will not accept personal cheques. Certified cheque is fine. I'd say cash but I'm thinking that might not be feasible for you at this time. The original $2000 I think is fair so that's the price we can stick with.

I won't be available to bring the bike anywhere until after the weekend.

Anymore questions just ask.

Thanks,
C

Second email.

Good to hear from you again
Thank you for this details, Well in regards to the Bike am very much interested in buying it and paying for it right away so you don't have to look around for any other buyer for it. I'm actually buying it for my Brother at home in Ontario as a surprise, But before i can send it to him i have to make sure the Bike is in a good condition . I hope you understand my point that there is no way i come to do the inspection of the Bike my self as have said earlier besides the Bike will be picked up and transported to Ontario where my Parents stays, So whatever you tell me about the good and the bad aspect of the Bike is what i will believe and also inform the Pick-up agent that will be coming over to pick the Bike
After have completed the payment the agent will contact you about where and when the pick up will take place and they will also be of assistance to do the change of ownership when they get there. but before i proceed with the Payment is there is any problem which you're yet to mention that i should know , please let me know now meanwhile can you please please take the add off online now till we complete the transaction and please send me your PayPal email and i will make the Payment right now
Regards

Steve

I was contacted by a scammer "Billie" yesterday and luckily found this site. I called the number he had been using to text me. "Billie's" phone went straight to "Raj's" voicemail. The situation was exactly as you have all described (offering way more than asked - 5400 for a 4500 trailer that he hadn't come to see) and I called the guy on it. Then I offered to call PayPal for him if he would give me his name and email (which I had already given him my info), but it didn't go well. Hope none of you get harassed as badly as I did. If he contacts me again, I'm calling my cell provider and blocking his number. I'm still concerned that now he has my full name, email, and phone number, though....

Here is the play by play, once we'd already gotten acquainted...

him - Hello, I need ur full name on the paypal account?
me - it's *** ***
him - yes, paypal is already pull up ur name, just wanna confirm that from you and the payment is done by now and i hope you have access to the paypal account to confirmed that you got the payment upon the email confirmation from paypal.
me - Thanks, I'll keep checking paypal and my email for confirmation. I'll let you know as soon as it shows up.
him - oh ok
him - hello
me - What's up Billie? I just called your number and it was a voicemail for Raj. Are you Raj?
him - yeah, my nickname.
me - ok well your paypal hasn't shown up yet and it usually shows up right away so you may want to call paypal. Also, we are wondering about your overpayment. Just so you know, we are not able to reimburse you or any company for delivery costs. We are interested in a straight deal where you give us 4500 and you receive the trailer (delivery organized and paid for by you). Sorry if I came across harsh but there are scammers out there and we need to be careful. I'm sure you're not a scammer, are you Raj?
me - Raj?
him - what the f*** do you mean by saying I'm a scammer ?
me - The money's not there, Raj. I think you should be most concerned with where your money went.
him - I just got a message from paypal that they being holding the fund for the verification needed from you so what's it about if i may ask?
me - I didn't get anything from them, you need to call. What's your email and I'll call paypal.
him - the message i got from them saying that i should contact the department handle the transaction not to call the customer care cos they have no access to view the transaction.
me - Then contact the department. What do you expect me to do about it?
me - Raj, this is still sounding exactly like the scam a million other people have experienced. Unless you can figure out your thing with paypal, I suggest you move on. If you want me to help, give me your email and full name and I'll call paypal.
him - i just being wondering why you never got a message from them concerning about the money being held in your account.
me - That's why I told you to call. There's nothing I can do.
him - yea i didn't expect you to do anything cos i don't know what you are trying to pull on
me - Oh Raj. If you contact me again I'm reporting you to the authorities.
him - i have already reported you so i hope to see you in jail soon

Welcome to Scamwarners scammercaught007 and you handled the scammer brilliantly well, though it's easy to see how an inexperienced seller can be pressured in to making a mistake.

You're trying to perform a legitimate deal and he's trying to scam you anyway which way he can.

If you're a seller and the buyer wants YOU to make any sort of payment for any reason, you're dealing with a scammer. You'll undoubtedly find if you log in to your Paypal that the money he claims to have sent you is an illusion created by sending you a 'spoof' message pretending to be from Paypal.

The excuse that Paypal has put a hold on the payment is cute, but it's his reserve position and last attempt to make his scam work.

I can't make it any clearer to others - any buyer asking YOU (a seller) to make a payment is a scammer.

CAR ADVERTS - If a car seller mentions escrow - he's scamming you Never ever for any reason pay anything until you have seen and inspected the vehicle
