****NEW SCAMMER ALERT CAMBEL LUCK [email protected] *****

Put our ad for our van for sale up on gumtree and almost straight away got a message from our "mate" Cambel seeing if it was still for sale and could we email him. We emailed that it was still for sale and this was his reply email....

*******************************************************************************************************************
<from Cambel>

Hello mate,

It sounds good to know that it is still available for sale. I did go through your advert and I am satisfied with it. I am okay with the asking price and would love to go ahead with the deal right away because this meets my perfect search for time being now. I am contacting you via email, I am on duty and coming to your residence for inspection won't be possible, so you have to assure me that its in condition described. You may now consider me a favorite buyer and if possible withdraw the posting from the site immediately so that I can be rest assured that it is all mine . I don't mind adding an extra $300.00 for you just to take down the posting.

Like I said earlier, I'm very busy with my job as I currently work as Marine official, so I will be paying you online via my PayPal account which is attached to my bank account because it is the only form of payment that I have access to right now and also because of its good security nature. If you are interested in selling it please provide me with the following information:

1)Your full name
2) Paypal email address,
3)Address for pick up
4)Your personal mobile #

Kindly get back to me with your paypal email address or better still you can send me a paypal invoice so that i can complete the transaction.
In case you don't have a paypal account, simply log on to http://www.paypal.com.au you can either attach it to your bank account or credit card and fund in paypal can be transferred to either accounts.
What is your final asking price ? . I will be waiting to hear from you soon

NB.. pls get the ad off the internet or mark it as sold as i am really keen about the purchase and i will be willing to pay any price offer from you. what is ur best price offer?

Best regards

Guys, got this from a Cambel Luck ([email protected]) also by putting a car sale ad on gum tree.

Here is the reply:

cambel luck <[email protected]>

Thanks for the response,I would have loved to call you directly but due to the nature of my work we do not have access to phone at the moment, which is why I contacted you with internet messaging facility.

I am buying this for my first son who just graduated on top of his class at Charles Darwin University in NT ,He studied Building Design & Architecture. I want it to be the perfect graduation gift for him and am making it a surprise package ,Does it have any history I should be aware of? and why are you selling if you don't mind my asking. I don't mind adding an extra $300.00 for you just to take down the posting..I am already in talks with freighters that will handle the pickup and delivery .I will really appreciate if you can email more info

Due to the nature of my work i am a very busy man working all day,am a sailor am presently on-board, i don't have access to my bank account online as am not with my credit card details here but i have my ANZ bank account link up with my PayPal account so I will be paying you through PayPal to your nominated bank account or better still is if you have a PayPal account ,please get back to me with your BSB and account details or PayPal account so i can proceed with the payment and contact the courier agent who will come to pick it up and deliver it in NT for my son .Await your reply .

Regards

Funny how they go into all this detail but no mention of any transfer papers or to sign any documents. Hey - not even a test drive!! You know this is BS!!

Hope this helps people out there and stops this chump taking any money.

We listed a car for sale on Gumtree only to receive communication via text from a Cambel Luck "cambel luck" <[email protected] asking us to take the car off the listing for an extra $300. My partner sensed something fishy, but we decided to proceed with a bit of caution. Leaving the listing posted.

We were given the graduating son story and the marine officer story , when we had taken a few more photos I emailed Cambel to say that my Paypal account was not currently linked to my bank account and that would take a few days to happen, for expediency we asked Cambel to deposit the funds into my partners bank account.

Our concern was that this fellow was buying a 40 year old car for his 20 something son unseen and untested, and willing to pay more than we asked?? When we agreed the advertised price $5500 he then dropped the WESTERN Union Bomb. The radar was up. I have dealt with Western Union before and know how much their charges are. Then we were "Directed" to pay the charges for the shipping company (which is in CHINA!!) to be paid prior to collection of the car from our address.

My partner emailed "cambel luck" <[email protected] to say we were not happy with him purchasing the vehicle without at least seeing it. He suggested he fly his son down to view the car or have some one come to look at it. My partner even went as far as to suggest he get the RACQ to do a thorough pre sale check.

At this stage we have not heard back from our "Chief Engineer of the Fleet Aircraft Carrier ( a very busy man) so busy that I get a reply via email, before I finished MSGing my partner with the confirmation details. We did provide bank details, but will be keeping a close eye on things there.

Welcome to Scamwarners Luck_E_scape,

In this scam the scammer is NOT interested in your car. He wants to steal your money. No one will ever come to pick up the vehicle. It is all a scam with the scammer playing all roles.

The scammer wanted to send you a fake Paypal payment. He has a fake Paypal address from a free email provider. The payment would look real. Its a screen shot of a fake payment. He then will instruct you to pay a mover, shipper or agent. The fake Paypal email from the scammer would say that your Paypal funds will be released when you send the scammer (mover, agent or shipper) money via Western Union or Money Gram. In reality Paypal would never hold your funds.

Log into Paypal directly without any links to check for monies received or call Paypal directly from the number on their site.

If you are selling electronics, Cell phones or computers then the scammer is trying to steal your "item". Your fake funds will be released when you send the scammer a scan copy of a receipt showing you mailed your item.

This same scam works with fake check and money orders. You and your bank will think they are real. After you cash the fake check. Days or weeks later your bank will inform you of the fraud. Your bank will have you repay the monies. Possibly close your account for fraud and report you to Law Enforcement.

The best thing to do is to sell in person face to face in a public place.

Please contacta moferatorstor if you have a question or information about this post.

Please do not tell the scammer he is posted here.

Hi everybody, I posted an ad on Gumtree Melbourne yesterday and received a txt within hours from Cambel Luck. Same story, he's a sailor, son passed with Honours at Darwin Uni and wants my campervan as a surprise pressie.
Will pay $300 to take post down, wants my bank details etc. I was advised by my son to look on scamwarners as lo and behold here he is. What I don't understand is if this person is a known scammer then how does he keep getting away with it and continue to do this? I am not very experienced with scams etc so would apreciate any tips of what to look out for. Also why is there a post saying do not tell him he is on scamwarners?

Welcome to Scamwarners motherdog.

This is how the scam works.

The set up text/mail the scammer sends you gives you a reason why he can't view or pick up the item himself. (This is the important feature as the scam depends on this). Either he's at sea, working abroad or abroad with the military. I've even seen them claim to be down a mine.

The request to you to take down the ad is to make you commit to their scam.

What he'll want is you to use Paypal as he'll send you a spoofed message from Paypal telling you he's made payment to you. 'Spoofing' is a way to send an e-mail making it look as if it's come from Paypal. An alternative is for him to send you a counterfeit cheque.

The important fact is that he sends you more than the asking price with the excuse that you are to pay the collection agent he uses for the cost of him collecting from you. As he's sent you a 'fake' payment any money you send to the collection agent, which is really him, is what he's interested in stealing from you.

If he sends a couple of hundred messages out a day he can finance his life in the bar as he taps these out every day of the week.

How can you spot them ? Always make it cash on collection and never ever pay anyone anything when you are selling goods. Fanciful biographies about their jobs, especially involving them being at sea, is enough of a sign. The scammer thinks he being smart mentioning his son and details to make himself sound authentically Australian. I've known them use 'mate' in their mails too. :D Everyone knows Australians say 'cobber'

Pointless biographical information is a sign of a scammer trying too hard. If you want to check, make him give you his phone number to call him. They use template mails and you wouldn't understand a word he says, even if he can speak English. Any excuse that you can't speak to the buyer - walk away.

CAR ADVERTS - If a car seller mentions escrow - he's scamming you Never ever for any reason pay anything until you have seen and inspected the vehicle

Thank you so much ! I now know exactly what to watch out for!

Thank you so much for the warnings. Cambel Luck was also contacting us as soon as we put an ad up - buying a vehicle for his son, sight unseen! $300 to take down ad, sailor, same email etc. It wasn't GumTree so he's spreading his wings. This blog is a great help as we thought it sounded odd.
