Craigslist, Ebay and other online buying/selling scams.

Beware - I have now spotted two different companies on major ad sites both using the suffix 'Ltd' when the companies they claim to be have been dissolved. This is unlawful if not illegal when the company has been dissolved. It is misleading and technically they are imposters by trading under a name that doesn't exist. You can't add 'Ltd' to your company name on a whim.

A buyer is likely to believe that a seller who is incorporated is of greater substance than one who is just an individual or an unincorporated company, and would believe them to be easier to trace in the event of there being any issues.

The greater surprise is that it appears that the ad sites don't check.

As I haven't mentioned any specific names I can describe some curious details about one of those 'faux' companies. Before it went in to dissolution it had a Romanian director and the 'replacement' company imports foreign registered left hand drive cars to the UK for sale. In an earlier discussion with a member here it was determined that second hand cars were cheaper in the UK, so importing cars from the continent defies economic sense, apart from the obvious fact that selling foreign registered wrong side drive cars is senselessly pointless and uneconomic. The only benefit, apart from having to sell them at a loss, is that they are HPI check resistant making stolen, finance outstanding, accident damaged or written off cars more easy to dispose of.

The 'company' importing' the cars can hardly be described as a car importer if they don't actually go to the trouble of re-registering them and, without the correct foreign registration documents, the buyer could end up in quite a mess.

Be careful and double check who you deal with on these sites.
