Hello Everyone,

I have just signed up here, i need a little advise here. I was looking for an iphone 5s on gumtree and found one which was closer to me and cheaper as well, I then emailed using gumtree email service and got a reply back within 15 minutes asking my personal email address because seller couldn't use his mobile while at work, so he/she said i would use my work email address for any correspondence, so i gave it to him, he then said on next email that the phone is new with 3 years warranty etc etc. today i received an email which rang bell in my head so thought i would i ask here it reads:

''yes it have extended warranty bought from apple
unfortunately i had to go to Alford, i have the item here with me and can deliver.
We can close the deal through PayZone a local store near you.
You will have the opportunity to try the item at your address.
The transaction will be like cash on delivery, let me know if you're interested.''

in reply to this I asked what is payzone, because i have never heard of that before. so he came back with following reply:

''you don't have to pay until you will receive the product, all you have to do is to buy a printout from a store near you and keep them until you will receive and inspect the item.
You will pay me using the printout after you test and inspect the product, if you're not agree you can anytime ask for a refund.

Let me know if you're ok so i can contact them to send you an invoice with further instructions, Let me know your postal code if you don't know any stores near you.
Thanks!''

The email address he is using is ([email protected]) and name shows as ''Hutt Miriam''

Anyone please have any idea whether it seems legitimate deal or a con job.

Thanks for reading and your advises.

Welcome to Scamwarners Woolies,

The emails and what you typed all point to a scam. PayZone appears to be similar to Western Union and Money Gram. There will be no protection for you. Even though he said that you will keep the print out. He will ask you for some information on the slip to prove that you made the payment. Once he has the information he can pick up the money. He does not need the print out.

He also contradicted himself a couple of times. He say’s you will go to the store. Then he say he’ll contact PayZone to send you an invoice. He also say’s you try it out. Then he say it will be like cash on delivery.

Another point. His first line was the only mention of a phone. That is because he had to write that himself to answer your question. The remaining and next email are all scripts with the terms “item” and “product”

It is best to buy your electronics from a local store front or meet the person face to face.

Please contacta moferatorstor if you have a question or information about this post.

Please do not tell the scammer he is posted here.

Does this sound familiar, I was trying to buy an imac....

"
I will explain you again,
1. You buy the printout from an epay store and keep them until you receive the item
2. You will confirm that you bought the printouts with the store not with me and you will not send me any pin or something about the payment to me
3. I send the item to your address,
4. You will test and inspect it and if everything is ok you will send me the printout.
5.If not you will receive a refund from the store.
let me know if interested because i must contact them to send you an invoice with further instructions.
thanks

Welcome to Scamwarners budgetedition.

It sounds like a foreign scammer, most likely West African, who like these funky pre-pay options as they can use them abroad online to buy goods for themselves. They don't like speaking on the phone as their number and accent will give them away. It's likely you wouldn't be able to understand much of what he says if you spoke to him, and he knows this.

They are't very good at constructing Western names, and Kegan Alison is a poor effort, and issuing invoices is silly between a private seller and buyer.

If you can't meet up somewhere public, close to where you live, and pay cash face to face don't get involved. Gumtree is full of scammers.

Anyhow. it was very helpful. I asked the phone number to contact.
I will see how it goes. However I am sure he won't give me his phone number.

Good posting.

If he's happy for you to try the item before you pay, why's he so specific about using this prepay voucher ? The reason is usually that he's going to ask for some details to prove you did what he asked that'll enable him to use it before you get the item. Scammers love these prepay systems because they know most people don't know the rules, and they work out they can easily dupe you in to giving away enough info for them to use it and you won't know what you're doing.

Don't buy the voucher but just for fun say you did, and wait to see what information he wants off you. You can be sure it'll be enough to enable him to use it without ever sending you anything.
