Just by simply asking the Council Tax billing authority name, tax band and billing reference will flummox 99% of scammers and if you ask for a copy of their tax demand, which is no great deal, then you know you aren't completely wasting your time. Then just make sure that anything you pay goes into a UK bank account matching the name on the Council Tax bill.

Follow the same procedure with UK holiday rentals and scammers might find they have to go and work for a living.

Checking the information you are given isn't hard - but I'm not going to give scammers any clues. :D
