I don't think there is any need to give the cheque in. You can drop a line to the issuing bank saying that someone is forging their cheques - they might want to see it.

Just ignore him. Nothing else to do. Well, you can tell him the cheque bounced, or that they wouldn't cash it as i was an obvious fake. Neither of those are necessary though.

Hi Budman, the cheque is fake, as you know, and it is quite possible that he does have friends there.

There is a large cheque printing gang in Toronto, they get busted every now and then, but soon start up again. It is possible that your cheque came from them initially.

Take it to RCMP, explain how and why you got it, and leave it at that.

I hope that there is nothing that will help the scammer/s get close to your real life details.

You will soon get, or possibly get emails from various legal people in Nigeria, or even the fbi@yahoo concerning the lost cheque, ignore and delete
