the job was for driving. but did a google found this site and signed up. alos told gumtree dont know if they can do more to stop this or not. had a gut feeling was a scam as some of the grammar is bad.

You are right of course in thinking that this a scam. It's a standard fake check scam, in which the scammer sends you fake checks and tells you to deposit them and send cash before the bank realizes they are fake. Of course, once the bank does discover the fakes, you are the one in a heap of trouble.

This is a good example of how scams evolve, though. As job sites and applicants become more aware of the signs of fake check scams, they become more proactive about getting these ads removed quickly. If the scammer places an ad for the fake check job, it will likely be flagged and removed almost immediately. So instead, he posts a different (fake) job that sounds more legitimate, and doesn't mention check cashing. Then he just redirects anyone who inquires to this "other" job.
