I got a scam letter for renting a room via yahoo.com mail (both of our addresses are with yahoo.) Is there any way I can trace their IP address? I can "view source" and it shows my address. How do I find out their IP address? I already sent over my "application" to rent a room with my personal info and 25.00 for a credit check and found out it was a scam. I am planning on going to the police station tomorrow. I want to go with as much info as possible. Does an IP address give me a person's name or just where their computer is being used? Please help!

The scammer's IP address is usually the one nearest the bottom of the header, as there will be several IPs in there that the email has traveled via.

Wow! I need you and thank you for the information.

I am SO GLAD YOU BURST MY BUBBLE

So I can close this chapter with no more fretting, right? Thanks so much for your help.

It can give the location of the computer. Unless the user is using a static email system, it won't tell you the exact location. The name you will get is the name the scammer has attached to the email address. It will not give you the name of the actual user / scammer.

Taking the emails with the headers can be helpful. It won't give you the exact location or the name of the person, sadly. You can even check your own header by sending an email to yourself. I hope this helps.
