These guys are a debt collection agency, and they called me a few days ago. They claimed I owe 237.75$ in medical bills. What makes me think these guys are scammers is the fact that I HAVE NO DEBT.

Can someone find out if they are legit?

It's really annoying when scammers threaten your credit rating while making snarky comments. These guys just don't feel ANY shame or guilt what-so-ever.

I forgot to mention: I paid all of the medical bills directly to the hospital, so I am confused why would the hospital use a debt collection agency instead of sending the bill directly to me.

CMRE Finacial Services is a genuine company who collects debts for healthcare organisations. However, it is possible for a scammer to use their name as a cover or disguise for his attempted theft of your money.

Therefore, I advise you to go to the CMRE website and contact them using the online form, email address, or telephone numbers shown there, and check whether it was the genuine company/one of their representatives who contacted you.

There are many adverse reports on the internet about this company's business practices.

I'm not familiar with US law on debt recovery but this advice that I found sounds sensible.

Find out the address of the collection agency from the Better Business website and send them a debt validation letter by certified mail. If they have already received the payment from the insurance company, they will not be able to validate the debt and you may send a copy of the return receipt to the bureaus asking them to remove it. If they do not remove the debt from your report, you may file a complaint with the FTC. Filing a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission is very much effective in such cases.
