Okay so I'm selling a Vivicam camera on eBay and this dude offered to pay through Paypal $150. Our conversation went like this:

Hello is this for sale and whats the asking price?

Yes it is, for $25.

Thanks i am willing to proceed with the transaction now and pay you
150 which include Postage&Packages. Kindly log in to your PayPal
account and select the request money button located at the top of your
PayPal account home page and send the money request directly to my
PayPal account ID which is ******@gmail.com so that i can
submit payment to you via PayPal right now as PayPal is safe, fast and
easy to send and receive money online or let me know if this is your
PayPal email ID.

Are you sure you want to pay $150?

Yes.

Does this seem legit to you guys, if it;s through Paypal?

Hi Mango,

I would certainly be highly suspicious about this. It's very unusual that someone would pay 6 times the amount for a phone so readily over the internet.

Also, the grammar / written English is typical of that used by scammers.

I would say it is the beginnings of a scam. Steer clear

Okay thank you! But I have another question. I requested the payment on Paypal, then I cancelled it almost immediately. Would he still be able to get information/money if I've cancelled it?

definitely stay well away!

It's obviously fake since he just sent me this when I cancelled:

Thanks for mail i want you to be rest assured that this is legit and i just got of the item online and wanted to but for a friend of mine in Africa as a birthday gift so i will like to get the account set up and get back to me with the details

I cancelled the request, but can he still get my information if he has my email? *pokes question above*

Don't worry about him getting into your paypal account. He can't do anything with your email address and that's all paypal shares with him.

He only wanted the request so he could respond with a fake email from paypal. His intention was simply to send you a fake paypal email saying that payment was made, but paypal is holding it until you send proof of shipment. The paypal email might tell you to ship via a regular shipping service (i.e. he is after the camera), or it may instruct you to send cash via western Union to the scammer's "shipping company" or to send cash for "taxes" etc. (which means he is simply after your cash). In the end, no money has been sent anywhere, and the scammer is just trying to get cash and/or a camera out of you. He hopes to pressure you to send the camera and/or money before you realize that the paypal email is fake.

Paypal is not an escrow service, and they do not get in the middle of transactions--transfers will immediately appear in your account. If you cannot log into paypal directly (never use a link sent to you) and see the money in your account, then it hasn't been paid.

Can you post the full email address this scammer was using so that it shows up for others who are suspicious?

You did the right thing by cancelling, and your later post with the additional information shows it is definitely a scam.

I wouldn't overly worry about him having your email address. Just make sure that you drop all contact immediately. You may well get more emails from them asking for progress or shipment. Don't even reply (in fact, don't even read them) - just delete the emails and they will eventually get the hint and go away.

Well done for trusting your instincts and avoiding this scammer.

It would be good if you could post the scammers email address so that it is associated with this post. That way any other potential victims might be saved from being scammed by reading this. :)
