Are these modeling scams?

I sent out some pictures and my modeling resume to some Craigslist ads. Here are some of the responses I received. I am thinking these are scams. Can someone verify that this is indeed a scam?

Hello Donald,

I will NOT accept payment for others, and I will NOT send funds via Western Union to others. Western Union will charge a fee of approximately $140 to me for wiring such a large sum of money. I understand that the studio fee needs to be paid, but Western Union and wire transfers are not the only option. Can you have the client cancel the check that she sent, and have the client mail me a new check with payment for me only?

I can be available on August 5, 6, or 7, 2009. Also, I am not looking to claim a patent or copyright on the photos from the upcoming photo shoot. However, I just want to know which magazine or catalog will publish these photos..

You are right in suspecting both these "agencies" as being scams. In fact, it looks like a single scammer. Here are some red flags.

The scammer uses a gmail account and then changes to a yahoo account. Perhaps some other targeted model got his gmail account shut down. That would explain his "indisposition" - he had to go through his contact list to get back in touch with all his marks.

Both start sentences with "Am" instead of "I am" - a sure sign that they are not native speakers of English. There are other grammar, spelling, sentence structure, and punctuation errors which are indicative of someone in West Africa.

This is an overpayment scam. The check he sends to you (or has his "mule" send you) will be fraudulent (either a counterfeit drawn on a real bank account or a made-up account). Your bank would "clear" the check in a few days, but it may take weeks or even months for them to determine that the check is no good. Then you would be on the hook for the entire amount, and you may have to answer some uncomfortable questions by bank authorities or law enforcement.

You were entirely right to question the overpayment and the sending of money by Western Union. Never send money by Western Union or Moneygram to someone you don't know personally (having met them face-to-face).

BTW, you might want to go back into your post and edit or remove your name from the emails for privacy reasons.

Any situation where someone from the internet sends you a cheque where you are then to send a part of it on, or back, by Western Union, is a scam, and they want you to turn their worthless counterfeit cheque into cash for their pocket.

This person has nothing to do with modelling and is a cheque counterfeiter. They send you worthless paper and you send them cash by Western Union. Get them to send you the money by Western Union or offer to send them a cheque (that you can place a stop on). They won't accept a cheque because it's unlikely that they even have a bank account. However, I wouldn't trust sending a cheque to a counterfeiter or they'll be issuing fake cheques on your account next.

The style of their mails is typical West African scammer.

Also the phone number is a UK forwarding service favoured by scammers which redirects to anywhere worldwide.

I am quite sure the following is another scam because I emailed the editor-in-chief of the magazine who confirmed that (1) there is no photo shoot scheduled in my city for the magazine, (2) the magazine will not be featuring the fashion designer in question, and (3) the attached modeling contract is not used by the magazine.

Sometimes scammers quote real websites in their emails, but with fake contact details. This one seems to have gone to the trouble of creating a fake site, which has been shut down. An occupational hazard.

He's upset because his cheque forger is going to be displeased and may not trust him again.

You should just ignore him and watch out for other attempts at fraud. If they've got your e-mail addie they'll send you more scam mails.

Unfortunately for every internet job or proposition there's a posse of 419 scammers waiting to feed on unwary and trusting people.

For and in consideration of the mutual promises herein contained, the parties hereby agree as follows.

Termination of Agreement. Agreement with Model / Applicants can only be terminated after the shoot.

Model agrees to conduct himself/herself with propriety and dignity, and to do nothing on an engagement or otherwise that may tend to injure the reputation and goodwill of Model nor to do any act or thing which impairs Model's capacity to at all times fully comply with the terms of this agreement.

The date for the shooting is fixed for 5th- 7th so you can confirm the date comfortable for you, i will have to make arrangement for that studio ahead from now, i will notify you the exact studio for the shooting a week before as soon as the arrangement is completed with our client. Hello Donald,

I will NOT accept payment for others, and I will NOT send funds via Western Union to others. Western Union will charge a fee of approximately $140 to me for wiring such a large sum of money. I understand that the studio fee needs to be paid, but Western Union and wire transfers are not the only option. Can you have the client cancel the check that she sent, and have the client mail me a new check with payment for me only?

I can be available on August 5, 6, or 7, 2009. Also, I am not looking to claim a patent or copyright on the photos from the upcoming photo shoot. However, I just want to know which magazine or catalog will publish these photos..

Regarding the western union charge you can have it deducted from the balance of the fund once the funds is available OK.

No, they're not getting you...because you were too smart for them. Good job!

Regarding the threats of legal action - please don't let that scare you. They are nothing but scummy scammers probably sitting in some sweaty internet cafe in Lagos, Nigeria (or some other West African location). They will blast you with everything they can think of to try to get you to send that money over Western Union.

But the only weapons they have at their disposal are words typed on a keyboard. That is all. If you remember that, you will realize that there really is nothing to fear.

Delete their emails without reading them. They are nothing but bytes on a screen. And good luck with your modeling careers.
