Has someone offered you a huge sum of money or a valuable consignment? It's a 419 or advance fee fraud - find out how they work, and what to do to be safe.

Hi,

I foolishly sent my CV to someone who I have now realised is a scammer. My date of birth wasn't on it, but my address, mobile and home phone numbers and employment history were. Am I now at risk of identity fraud? I have had two phone calls from people asking for 'Elizabeth' (not my name), which particularly concerns me.

I feel like such an idiot – I am usually so careful about these things.

Thanks in advance for any advice you might be able to provide.

Hi and welcome to ScamWarners.

With the information that the scammer has about you, identity theft is not possible (they don't really have much more than is in the phone directory).

Also, scammers don't tend to do anything with the information that they are sent, they just ask for it to look legitimate.

At worst, you might get a few phone calls from the scammer trying to persuade you the job is real.

Please do not tell scammers that they are listed here - it will take them seconds to change their fake details and their new details will not be listed for any future victims to find.

First of all - don't panic!
Scammers are basically lazy tossers who are trying to steal your money. The best course of action is to stop all forms of dialogue with immediate effect. They only ask for personal info to make the scam more beleivable. It will be unlikely for your info to be used for dubious purposes. If you still have concerns, maybe contact your phone provider and ask them to block all incoming calls from people you don't know for several months or something? I too have given a scammer my personal details once previously with no adverse effects. You may receive further scam messages in the next few months because sometimes they sell email addresses to other scammers etc.

Thank you both very much – this makes me feel much better! I can cope with a few annoying phone calls and emails as long as I know that they're not able to use my details for anything nefarious.

Again, thanks so much for putting my mind at ease.
