Hello bubblybetty and welcome to ScamWarners.

I'm so glad that you investigated this before you sent any money, and that the lady at Western Union was able to help with this too.

Quite a lot of scammers are trying to trick women this way into sending money to them, so thank you for posting this information about the scammer who tried to steal from you - it will help to warn other women about him.

If you haven't already done so, do read this introduction to Scammers Impersonating Military Personnel, here:

Thanks again for posting this information.

Hi There
Yes the same has happened to me just last month but unfortunately i paid the first lot of leave money, my own fault i convinced the lady in Wetern Money transfer that i knew what i was doing. It was only when i was asked for another payment for a replacement officer that i too had doubts. Yes i lost some money but not as much as i could have done if i hadnt come on this site and checked it out for myself, i had been trying to find out info before i paid the frst lot of money but unfortunately i didnt find this site until last week. Glad you didnt pay the money and be sure to take the advise from this site it is very helpful
Regards

Congratulations to the lady at Western Union bubblybetty.

Though your pride may be hurt you can get some satisfaction from knowing how sick the lying scumbag will feel that you found him out.

Non-EU citizens should go here to find out about obtaining a visa to work as an au pair in the UK

Whenever payment is requested by Western Union you're dealing with a scammer

Hi Betty and Cheryl

Bubblebetty, if you haven't deleted the emails from this person already I would love to be able to get them posted here to help prevent others from going through what you and Cheryl have been through. I can send you an email address and post it for you if you prefer.

A couple of warning signs to take note, consultant.com is a free email address provided by an email provider called mail.com, they also have free emails for accountant.com, lawyer.com and financier.com which are all commonly used by scammers, i would go as far as to say that a person who really worked in those professions would never use such an email address.

Another warning sign that is easy to pick up is that the US army is asking for payment in UK pounds, then presumable asking for it to be sent by Western Union.

Not that the US army would need a private citizen to send them money for any reason whatsoever, but if they did they would not;
Ask for payment in any other currency besides US dollars
Use Western Union to receive payment
Contact you with any other email besides an official US military email address
Contact you at all in the first place

Leave from the army is much the same as with any other employer, if the worker has a leave entitlement, the employee themselves will apply for it and it will either be granted or rejected, no money would ever need to be paid and no third party would ever be required to make an application.

I'm glad you found out quite soon and didn't lose much more than money.
